We're having our own mini Italian wine fest with the dapper Micah this Friday. He'll be pouring 8 wines from one of our favorite portfolios. Micah is knowledgeable and passionate about his wines so if you want to talk Brunello or Barolo, he's your man. In addition to the tasting wines, we'll be offering some great discounts on all of Micah's wines we have in the shop, including the fancy stuff we keep in the temperature controlled coolers (Brunelli from Valdicava, Canalicchio di Sopra and Castello Romitorio along with some Fontodi Syrah). Oh yeah, it's gonna be awesome. If you haven't been to the best little wine shop in Worcester, this would be a good time to check us out.
The line-up thus far:
2008 Castello Romitorio, Morellino di Scansano (Maremma)
Mostly Sangiovese blended with Cabernet and Syrah Scansano, founded at the time of the Etruscans, developed in the middle ages into an important civic center. It is recognized around the world for its Morellino di Scansano wine, although that name was given rather recently. The area, notable for its unspoiled nature and arid hills, lies 150 meters above sea level only 20 kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Perched on the Alba hills in Castiglione Tinella between the famous appellations of Langhe and Monferrrato, sits Azienda Agricola Icardi. The family has worked the land, growing grapes since 1914. Through the work of Pierino Icardi (father of current proprietor Claudio) the family was able to purchase the land and today Claudio and his sister Maria Grazia manage the estate, bottling a range of everyday reds and whites.
2010 Icardi, Cortese, L'Aurora (Piedmont)
100% Cortese
Red reigns supreme in the Piedmont (think Barolo and Barbaresco) but the rich, juicy wines from the Cortese grape aren't to be overlooked.
2009 Valdicava Rosso di Montalcino (Tuscany)
100% Sangiovese
Rosso di Montalcino (aka "Baby Brunello) was established in 1984 and can be sold after only one year of ageing, providing producers cash flow while their Brunello di Montalcino ages (48 months minimum) and flexibility during less than stellar vintages. It also provides consumers with a less expensive and more accessible alternative to Brunello.
100% Nebbiolo Azienda Agricola Pelissero is a family-run estate located in the heart of Barbaresco. Third generation owner and head winemaker, Giorgio, and his family manage all aspects of production from the pruning the vines to marketing to their products. Nubiola may be one of the finest Barbaresco available for the price. Take advantage of the deeper than usual tasting discount.
NV Cantina Colli del Soligo, Col de Mez, Prosecco (Veneto)
100% Glera
Prosecco the grape, was officially renamed to Glera in 2009. It is responsible for a popular wine of the same name, the DOC for which is Prosecco di Conegliano Valdobbiadene. Soligo, founded in 1957, is a quality-minded estate producing single vineyard Prosecco from steep vineyard sites.
2009 Cantine Sardus Pater, IS SOLUS, Carignano del Sulcis (Sardenga)
100% Carignano
The Sardus Pater cooperative is located on the historical island of St. Antioco on the west side of the island of Sardenga. Founded in 1949, the first wines were produced in 1955. Sardus Pater specializes in the cultivation and production of the DOC Carignano del Sulcis on low yielding vines, many of which are over eighty years. Each bottle of Sardus Pater wine is the result of wise grape selection, winemaking carried out in accordance with ancient rules and modern winemaking techniques to provide the highest quality wines possible.
